On 22 February 2021, COVID-19 vaccinations commenced around Australia. This follows the release on 7 January 2021 by the Prime Minister of Australia’s Epidemiology and COVID 19 Vaccine Roadmap. The Roadmap provides details on:
- the COVID-19 Vaccine National Rollout Strategy;
- the population groups that will receive priority; and
- the establishment of hubs for distributing the Pfizer vaccine, which requires storage at ‑70°C.
Phase 1a of the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out is continuing, with a growing number of Australians in priority groups being administered their first vaccine. Priority groups include aged care and disability care residents and workers, frontline healthcare workers, and quarantine and border workers.
The Department of Health has launched an online eligibility checker to assist the Australian public in finding out which phase of the vaccination program they will be eligible for. The checker is simple to follow, and requires answers to eight questions. Access by veterans to the vaccine will be in line with these phase schedules.
